On July 19th, 2025, members of Put People First! PA Central Appalachia Healthcare Rights Committee (CAPA HRC) alongside local residents held a “Justice Jam” at Oakhurst Homes. We came together to sing songs, eat food, play games, sign up for benefits and share healthcare stories. The songs we recorded will become part of a new digital songbook for the national Nonviolent Medicaid Army.

During the event we honored community member Holly Steele, who was a caretaker of many children within Oakhurst Homes, who passed away shortly before the event. We met Holly during an earlier door knocking at Oakhurst. She shared our belief that healthcare is a human right. We mourn her loss, she was well loved by the community, and we are inspired by her memory. We look forward to continuing to build connections in this community and hopefully this can become an annual event!

Southeast PA Healthcare Rights Committee took to the streets again to door knock and table around the shuttered Crozer-Chester Medical Center on Saturday. We continued to connect with community members about how the hospital closures are impacting people and what we need from our local healthcare system.

We talked with people who:

  • moved two years ago to the area specifically to get care from the hospital system, only to have it shut down
  • have had to go multiple times to Riddle Hospital in the past few months and wait for hours in overcrowded emergency rooms
  • have lost their doctors and specialists and now are waiting over 8 months from now until the SPRING 2026 to see new providers at facilities further away
  • and we’ve heard many more stories about the preventable deaths that have happened and will continue if Crozer-Chester is not reopened.

Everyone has a healthcare story. Everyone has a reason – or many reasons – why we need our local hospital and healthcare system. Do our elected officials hear us? Will they take the action that is needed to keep our neighbors and families alive?

Take back our hospitals! Healthcare is a human right! Put People First!
